How the Life Palace is Calculated
Unlike Western astrology which relies primarily on the sun's position, Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology) uses a coordinate system based on the 12 Earthly Branches. The Life Palace is determined using two primary variables: your Lunar Birth Month and your Birth Hour.
The Formula
The calculation follows a specific movement around the 12-square chart:
- Step 1: Start at the "Zi" (Rat) position, which is the 1st position in the 12-square grid.
- Step 2: Move clockwise starting from "Zi" for the number of your Lunar Birth Month. (e.g., if you were born in the 3rd month, you move Zi -> Chou -> Yin).
- Step 3: From the position reached in Step 2, move counter-clockwise for the number of your Birth Hour (using the Earthly Branch sequence).
- The Result: The square where you land is your Life Palace (Ming Gong).
The 12 Earthly Branches
In Zi Wei Dou Shu, the chart is always divided into 12 palaces, each corresponding to an Earthly Branch. These branches represent specific directions and time periods:
- Zi (Rat): North
- Chou (Ox): North-Northeast
- Yin (Tiger): East-Northeast
- Mao (Rabbit): East
- Chen (Dragon): East-Southeast
- Si (Snake): South-Southeast
- Wu (Horse): South
- Wei (Goat): South-Southwest
- Shen (Monkey): West-Southwest
- You (Rooster): West
- Xu (Dog): West-Northwest
- Hai (Pig): North-Northwest
Why the Life Palace Matters
The Life Palace is the "anchor" of your chart. Once the Life Palace is established, the other 11 palaces (Siblings, Marriage, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Happiness, and Parents) are automatically placed in a counter-clockwise sequence.
If your Life Palace is strong and contains "Bright" stars (like Zi Wei or Tian Fu), it indicates a person with strong resilience and leadership qualities. If the palace is influenced by "Dark" or "clashing" stars, the individual may face more hurdles, requiring more conscious effort to achieve their goals.
Summary of the Calculation Logic
Mathematically, if we assign numbers 1 through 12 to the branches (Zi=1, Chou=2... Hai=12), the formula for the Life Palace position (P) is:
P = Month - Hour + 1
If the result is zero or negative, we add 12 to find the correct branch position.
