Welcome, aspiring Gielinorians, to the ultimate guide and tool for mastering your Prayer skill in Old School RuneScape! Whether you're aiming for a quest requirement, a combat boost, or the coveted Prayer Cape, efficient training is key. Our Prayer XP Calculator is designed to streamline your journey, helping you plan your path to your desired Prayer level.

Why is Prayer Important?

Prayer is a vital combat skill in Old School RuneScape, offering a wide array of passive and active benefits. From increasing your attack, strength, and defence stats with protection prayers, to boosting your damage output and accuracy, Prayer can dramatically impact your effectiveness in combat. It's also crucial for many quests, bossing encounters, and minigames. Achieving higher Prayer levels unlocks more powerful prayers, making you a more formidable adventurer.

How Our Calculator Works

Our Prayer XP Calculator takes the guesswork out of your training. Simply input your current Prayer level, your target Prayer level, and select your preferred bone and altar type. The calculator will instantly tell you:

  • Total XP Needed: The exact amount of experience required to reach your target.
  • Bones Required: How many of your chosen bone type you'll need.
  • Estimated Cost: An approximation of the current Grand Exchange cost for the required bones (based on a fixed average, always check live prices!).
  • XP per Bone: The effective experience you'll gain per bone with your chosen altar setup.

Choosing Your Bones: Efficiency vs. Cost

The type of bones you use significantly impacts both your training speed and cost. Here's a breakdown of common options:

Bones (4.5 XP Base)

The cheapest and most basic option. Ideal for very low levels or extreme budget training. Not recommended for rapid progression.

Big Bones (15 XP Base)

A step up from regular bones, offering more XP per bone at a slightly higher cost. Suitable for early-to-mid levels if on a tight budget.

Dragon Bones (72 XP Base)

The most popular choice for efficient Prayer training. Dragon bones offer a good balance of XP per bone and reasonable cost, making them a staple for players aiming for 70+ Prayer.

Wyvern Bones (50 XP Base) & Dagannoth Bones (125 XP Base)

These are less common but can be viable alternatives depending on market prices. Dagannoth bones offer excellent XP, making them a strong contender if affordable.

Superior Dragon Bones (150 XP Base)

The highest XP-giving bones in the game. These are expensive but offer the fastest Prayer XP rates. Best for those with a substantial budget looking to max Prayer quickly.

Altar Considerations: Maximizing Your XP

The altar you use is just as important as the bones, as it provides an XP multiplier. Most players will opt for either a Gilded Altar or the Chaos Altar.

Gilded Altar (3.5x XP)

Found in a Player-Owned House (POH), a Gilded Altar with two lit burners offers a 3.5x XP multiplier. This is the most common and safest method. You'll need to find a host with a Gilded Altar and 2 burners (often advertised on World 330 at the Rimmington portal).

Chaos Altar (3.5x XP)

Located in the Wilderness, the Chaos Altar also provides a 3.5x XP multiplier. While it offers the same XP rate as a Gilded Altar, it comes with a high risk due to player killers. However, many players find it cheaper as you can often save money by burying bones found from monsters or by taking only a few bones at a time to reduce risk.

Ectofuntus (4x XP)

Offering the highest XP multiplier at 4x, the Ectofuntus is located in Port Phasmatys. While the XP is great, the method is incredibly slow and tedious, requiring you to grind bones into bonemeal and then worship at the Ectofuntus. Generally not recommended for efficient training unless you enjoy the grind or have a specific reason.

Normal Altar (1x XP)

Any standard altar found in churches or banks provides no XP multiplier. Only use this if you have no other options or are simply burying bones for a very casual approach.

Efficiency Tips for Prayer Training

  • Gilded Altar Hosting: If using a Gilded Altar, make sure the host has two lit burners for the maximum 3.5x XP bonus.
  • Banking Methods: For Gilded Altar, use your POH teleport (e.g., House Teleport tablet or portal) to quickly access your altar, then teleport to a bank (e.g., Falador or Varrock Teleport) to resupply.
  • Chaos Altar Strategy: If using the Chaos Altar, bring only a few bones at a time to minimize losses to PKers. Use protection prayers against your opponent's attack style if you encounter one.
  • Quests: Many quests offer significant Prayer XP rewards. Completing quests like Holy Grail, Priest in Peril, and Fremennik Trials can give a substantial boost to your early Prayer levels.
  • Ensouled Heads: Killing monsters that drop ensouled heads and reanimating them for Prayer XP via the Arceuus spellbook can be a good alternative, especially if you have a high Magic level.

Armed with this calculator and knowledge, you're now ready to embark on your Prayer training journey. Plan smart, train efficiently, and soon you'll be enjoying the full benefits of a high Prayer level!
