  • Cons: Slower acting, generally less potent than muriatic acid, meaning you'll need to add more by weight. Can add sulfates to the water, which can contribute to scaling over time if levels get too high.

How to Use the Pool Acid Calculator

Our calculator simplifies the process of determining how much acid to add. Follow these steps:

  1. Test Your Water: Before using any chemicals, always perform a thorough water test. You'll need to know your current pool volume, pH, and Total Alkalinity (TA). Use reliable test strips or a liquid test kit for accuracy.
  2. Select Adjustment Type: Choose whether you want to adjust "Total Alkalinity (TA)" or "pH". For most cases, especially if both are high, start with TA adjustment.
  3. Enter Pool Volume: Input your pool's volume in gallons. If you don't know your exact volume, you can use online calculators or formulas to estimate it (e.g., for rectangular pools: Length x Width x Average Depth x 7.5 for gallons).
  4. Enter Current & Target Values: Based on your selected adjustment type, enter your current water parameter (TA or pH) and your desired target value. Recommended ranges are 80-120 ppm for TA and 7.4-7.6 for pH.

Safety First: Adding Acid to Your Pool

Handling pool chemicals, especially acids, requires extreme caution. Always prioritize safety:

  • Wear Protective Gear: Always wear safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves, and appropriate clothing (long sleeves, long pants, closed-toe shoes) when handling acid.
  • Dilute Acid: Never add water to acid. Always add acid to water. For muriatic acid, pre-dilute it in a large bucket of pool water (e.g., 5 gallons of pool water) before adding to the pool.
  • Add Slowly: Add the diluted acid slowly to the deepest part of your pool, away from skimmers or returns. Walk around the pool's perimeter while pouring to ensure even distribution.
