OSRS Runecrafting Calculator: Your Path to 99

Runecrafting XP & Trip Calculator

Enter your levels and method to calculate!

Welcome, fellow Scaper! Runecrafting in Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is often regarded as one of the most tedious and slow skills to train. Yet, it's also incredibly rewarding, offering substantial gold per hour at higher levels and unlocking crucial content like the Arceuus spellbook's Blood and Soul rune crafting. Whether you're aiming for the coveted max cape or just a higher crafting level for a specific diary requirement, this calculator and guide will help you plan your journey efficiently.

Our OSRS Runecrafting Calculator provides you with estimated experience needed, the number of runes you'll craft, and how many trips to the altar it will take to reach your desired level. Dive into the world of runic magic and let's make your path to 99 Runecrafting a little less daunting!

Why Train Runecrafting?

Beyond the satisfaction of a high-level skill, Runecrafting offers several tangible benefits:

  • Significant Gold Per Hour (GP/Hr): High-level Runecrafting methods, especially Blood, Soul, and Nature runes, are excellent money makers, often competing with top bossing methods.
  • Achievement Diary Requirements: Many diaries, particularly the elite tiers, require high Runecrafting levels (e.g., Fremennik Elite for double Astral runes, Ardougne Elite for double Death runes).
  • Access to Powerful Spells: Crafting Blood and Soul runes on the Arceuus altars unlocks access to the Arceuus spellbook's powerful reanimation spells, and allows for self-sufficiency in these runes for combat or magic training.
  • Max Cape Progression: For those on the journey to 99 in all skills, Runecrafting is an unavoidable challenge that, once overcome, brings you closer to the ultimate achievement.

Understanding Runecrafting XP & Mechanics

Runecrafting XP is gained by imbuing pure essence (or daeyalt essence) into runes at their respective altars. The amount of XP per essence varies by rune type, and certain levels unlock the ability to craft multiple runes per essence, drastically increasing XP rates and profit.

Key Mechanics:

  • Pure Essence: The primary material for crafting runes. Can be mined, purchased, or obtained through various means. Daeyalt essence offers slightly more XP per essence for some runes but is untradeable.
  • Altars: Each rune type has a corresponding altar. Accessing altars often requires specific talismans, tiaras, or quests.
  • Pouches: Runecrafting pouches (Small, Medium, Large, Giant) allow you to carry additional essence, significantly increasing runes crafted per trip. They degrade and need to be repaired by the Dark Mage in the Abyss or at a bank.
  • Abyssal Runecrafting: A popular, often faster, but more dangerous method for crafting runes that involves traversing the Abyss. Requires completion of the "Enter the Abyss" miniquest.
  • Double Runes: At certain levels, you begin to craft multiple runes per essence. For example, at level 44, you craft 2 Nature runes per essence; at 88, you craft 3. This is crucial for both XP and profit.

Runecrafting Methods by Level

Levels 1-23: The Foundation

  • Levels 1-9: Air Runes (Air Altar)

The simplest start. Use an Air talisman or tiara to access the Air Altar near Falador. It's slow but gets you started.

  • Levels 9-23: Mind Runes (Mind Altar)

Slightly better XP than Air runes. The Mind Altar is located north of Falador. You can also do quests like "Rune Mysteries" and "A Soul's Bane" for a quick XP boost.

Levels 23-77: Mid-Game Grind

  • Levels 23-44: Elemental Altars (Fire, Water, Earth)

As you unlock new altars, their respective runes offer marginally better XP. Fire runes (Al Kharid) are often preferred due to their proximity to a bank.

  • Levels 44-77: Nature Runes (Nature Altar)

This is where Runecrafting starts to become profitable. At level 44, you craft 2 Nature runes per essence. The Nature Altar is located in the Khazard Battlefield. Abyssal runecrafting becomes viable here for faster rates, especially with a large pouch.

  • Levels 50-77: Ourania (ZMI) Altar

The Ourania Altar (also known as ZMI) offers variable XP rates depending on your Runecrafting level. It's often the fastest XP method in this range, though less profitable than Nature runes. It's located deep in the Wilderness (safe zone access via Lunar Isle teleport or Khazard teleport to Ardougne and then walk/teleport).

  • Levels 65-77: Law Runes (Law Altar)

The Law Altar is on Entrana, requiring specific gear and an Amulet of Glory for quick teleporting. Good for profit, but often slower XP than ZMI or Abyssal Natures.

Levels 77-99: The Home Stretch & Elite Methods

  • Levels 77-90: Blood Runes (Arceuus Altar)

Once you reach level 77 Runecrafting and have completed "Sins of the Father," you can craft Blood Runes at the Arceuus Altar in the Darkmeyer region. This is a very popular method as it offers excellent XP rates (35k-50k/hr) and significant profit. It's a slower, more AFK method compared to traditional altars, requiring a pickaxe to mine dense essence blocks.

  • Levels 90-99: Soul Runes (Arceuus Altar)

At level 90, you unlock Soul Runes, also crafted at the Arceuus Altar. These offer slightly higher XP rates than Blood Runes (40k-65k/hr) and are still profitable, though often less so than Bloods. The process is identical to Blood Runes.

  • Levels 95-99: Wrath Runes (Kebos Lowlands)

Requiring level 95 Runecrafting and completion of "Dragon Slayer II," Wrath Runes offer competitive XP rates. This method involves crafting runes from wrath talismans and pure essence, but the high requirements often make Blood/Soul Runes more accessible for most players.

Gear and Inventory Setup

Optimizing your inventory and gear is crucial for maximizing XP and profit in Runecrafting.

  • Pouches: Always use the highest tier pouches you have unlocked (Small, Medium, Large, Giant). Keep them filled with essence. Repair them at the Dark Mage in the Abyss or a bank when they degrade.
  • Weight-Reducing Gear: Full Graceful outfit is highly recommended for all methods, as it reduces your weight and slows down run energy depletion.
  • Amulet of Glory/Eternal Glory: Provides unlimited teleports to Edgeville (near the Abyss entrance) or Draynor Village (close to the Air Altar). An Eternal Glory has unlimited charges.
  • Ring of Dueling: Teleports to Castle Wars (a bank is nearby) or Ferox Enclave (bank and restore pool). Useful for banking essence.
  • Stamina Potions: Essential for maintaining run energy, especially for Abyssal and ZMI methods.
  • Tiara/Talisman: Equip the appropriate tiara or carry the talisman for the altar you are using.
  • Pickaxe: Required for mining dense essence blocks for Blood/Soul Runes.
  • Mind Altar Teleport (for ZMI): A few Mind altar teleports can save time for ZMI runs if you don't use the fairy ring.

Making Money with Runecrafting

Runecrafting is one of the best money-making skills in OSRS. Here are the top methods:

  • Nature Runes (44+): With double Natures, this becomes very profitable, especially through the Abyss. Expect 200k-500k GP/hr depending on your efficiency and current rune prices.
  • Double Astral Runes (82+ with Fremennik Elite Diary): Highly profitable with the diary completed, yielding excellent GP/hr.
  • Blood Runes (77+): Consistent profit and good XP, often 500k-1M+ GP/hr depending on prices and efficiency.
  • Soul Runes (90+): Slightly less profitable than Bloods but still very good, offering similar GP/hr.
  • Wrath Runes (95+): Can be very profitable, but require high levels and quest completion.

No matter your goal, with dedication and the right strategy, you can conquer the Runecrafting skill. Use this calculator to set your targets, and refer to this guide for the best methods to get there. Good luck on your journey to 99 Runecrafting!
