Why Train Magic in OSRS?
Magic is one of the most versatile skills in Old School RuneScape, offering a wide array of benefits that impact almost every aspect of the game. Here's why you should consider leveling up your Magic:
- Combat Prowess: From ancient barrages in multi-combat zones to high-damage spells against boss monsters, Magic is a powerful combat style.
- Utility & Teleportation: Access to a vast range of teleports drastically cuts down travel time across Gielinor, making questing, clue scrolls, and general gameplay much more efficient.
- Money Making: Spells like High Alchemy, Superheat Item, and Plank Make can be excellent sources of income, often while gaining valuable experience.
- Support & Enchanting: Magic offers support spells for PVM and PVP, as well as enchanting spells for crafting valuable jewelry and items.
- Quest Requirements: Many quests have Magic level requirements, unlocking further content and lore.
How Our OSRS Mage Calculator Works
Our calculator is designed to be straightforward and provide you with essential information to plan your Magic training. Here's what you need to know:
Inputs:
- Current Magic Level: Your current Magic level (1-99).
- Current Experience: Your exact experience points in the Magic skill. You can find this on your skills tab in-game.
- Target Magic Level: The Magic level you aim to achieve (1-99).
- Spell/Method: A dropdown menu where you select the spell or training method you plan to use. Each option has a predetermined base XP per cast.
Outputs:
- Experience Needed: The total experience points required to reach your target level from your current experience.
- Casts Needed: The number of times you'll need to cast your chosen spell to reach the target experience.
- Estimated Time: An approximation of how long it will take, based on a general assumption of casts per hour (which you can adjust mentally based on your efficiency).
Popular Magic Training Methods
Choosing the right training method depends on your budget, desired XP rates, and engagement level. Here are some of the most popular options:
High Alchemy
High Alchemy is a classic and often profitable Magic training method. You cast the spell on an item, turning it into gold. It provides 65 base XP per cast. While it's click-intensive, it can often be done while doing other activities (like watching videos) and can even turn a profit if you find the right items to alch.
- Pros: Can be profitable, AFK-friendly (to an extent), consistent XP.
- Cons: Click-intensive, limited by nature rune supply, can be expensive if not careful with item selection.
Superheat Item
Superheat Item is another popular utility spell, providing 53 base XP per cast. This spell allows you to smelt ores into bars without needing a furnace, making it excellent for Smithing training or for generating income by smelting expensive ores like Runite. It's often paired with collecting volcanic ash or mining for self-sufficiency.
- Pros: Good XP rates, can be profitable, convenient for Smithing.
- Cons: Requires inventory management, can be click-intensive.
Plank Make
Plank Make is a Lunar spell (requiring Lunar Diplomacy quest) that converts logs into planks, granting 90 base XP per cast. This method is generally expensive but offers some of the highest non-combat Magic XP rates in the game, making it a fast way to train if you have the funds.
- Pros: Very high XP rates, relatively simple.
- Cons: Very expensive, requires Lunar spellbook.
Combat Spells (Bursting/Barraging)
For those looking to train Magic through combat, Bursting and Barraging are king. These multi-target Ancient Spells (requiring Desert Treasure I quest) are cast in multi-combat zones (like the Catacombs of Kourend or Ape Atoll Dungeon) on stacked monsters. While the base XP per cast is around 30, the ability to hit multiple targets simultaneously skyrockets the effective XP rate, often making it the fastest method to 99 Magic.
- Pros: Extremely high XP rates, good for combat stats, can be profitable through drops.
- Cons: Very expensive, requires high Magic level and specific gear, dangerous in some areas.
Stun / Enchanting
Stun spells (80 XP) or enchanting spells (e.g., Lvl-1 Enchant - 17.5 XP, Lvl-6 Enchant - 97 XP) are other options. Stun can be used for "splashing" (casting on a monster with high magic defence while wearing negative magic accuracy gear for zero damage hits) for very AFK, albeit slow, experience. Enchanting jewelry can be a decent mix of XP and potential profit, depending on market prices.
- Pros: Can be very AFK (splashing), enchanting can be profitable.
- Cons: Splashing is slow XP, enchanting profit varies.
Maximizing Your Magic XP
Beyond choosing a method, several factors can influence your Magic XP rates:
- Magic Imbued Staff: Reduces rune costs for some spells.
- Magic Guild Capes: The Ardougne Cloak (various tiers) offers a small chance to save runes on some teleports.
- Prayer: Using prayers like Mystic Might can improve combat accuracy, indirectly helping with combat spell XP.
- Runes & Supplies: Always ensure you have a steady supply of necessary runes and other items. Bulk buying can save money and time.
- Focus: For click-intensive methods, staying focused can significantly increase your casts per hour.
