Introduction to Firemaking in OSRS
Firemaking in Old School RuneScape is often considered one of the simpler skills to train, yet it offers valuable benefits beyond just a high-level cape. From providing light in dark areas to contributing to the Wintertodt minigame, a well-trained Firemaking level can open up new opportunities and efficiencies for your account. This calculator is designed to help you plan your journey to your desired Firemaking level, detailing the experience needed, logs required, and estimated costs.
Why Train Firemaking? Benefits and Rewards
While some players view Firemaking as a "buyable" and less engaging skill, it has several practical and cosmetic advantages:
Wintertodt
- Primary Training Method: Wintertodt is a popular Firemaking minigame that offers excellent experience rates, especially at lower levels, along with valuable supplies and rare items (e.g., Tome of Fire, Pyromancer outfit).
- Resource Generation: It's a fantastic way to gather various logs, herbs, and other skilling resources while training Firemaking.
Quests and Diaries
- Many quests, such as "Druidic Ritual" (requires 10 Firemaking) and "Observatory Quest" (requires 10 Firemaking), have Firemaking requirements.
- Achievement Diaries often require specific Firemaking levels or tasks, such as lighting specific types of logs in certain locations.
Max Cape & Completionist Goals
- Reaching level 99 Firemaking is a requirement for the prestigious Max Cape, a symbol of dedication and achievement in Gielinor.
- A high Firemaking level is also a step towards overall account completion and unlocking all content.
Firemaking Methods: Logs and Bonfires
The core of Firemaking training involves burning logs. The type of log dictates the experience gained per log and, consequently, the cost and speed of training.
Log Types and Experience Rates
Each log type provides a different amount of experience. Higher-tier logs offer more XP but are generally more expensive.
- Normal Logs: 40 XP. Used for early levels, very cheap.
- Oak Logs: 60 XP. A small step up, good for slightly faster early progression.
- Willow Logs: 90 XP. A common choice for mid-level training due to decent XP and low cost.
- Maple Logs: 135 XP. A good balance between XP and cost for many players.
- Yew Logs: 202.5 XP. Higher XP, higher cost. Often used by those with more GP.
- Magic Logs: 303.8 XP. Excellent XP, but significantly more expensive.
- Redwood Logs: 350 XP. The highest XP per log in the game, and also the most expensive. Often used by players with ample funds or those looking for the fastest XP.
Bonfires vs. Line Burning
Traditionally, players would "line burn" logs by dropping them in a line and then walking back to light them. However, the introduction of bonfires (requiring 35 Firemaking) revolutionized the skill:
- Bonfires: By using logs on an existing fire, you can create a bonfire which burns logs automatically. This method provides 50% more XP per log than line burning and is significantly more AFK. It's the preferred method for most players once they reach level 35.
- Line Burning: Still viable for lower levels or if you prefer a more active, click-intensive method.
Optimizing Your Firemaking Training
To make your Firemaking journey as efficient and cost-effective as possible, consider the following:
Essential Gear and Items
- Tinderbox: Absolutely essential for lighting fires. Always keep one in your inventory.
- Pyromancer Outfit: Obtained from Wintertodt, this outfit provides a cumulative 2.5% experience bonus when worn.
- Tome of Fire: Also from Wintertodt, this off-hand item provides a 50% experience boost when burning *unlit* logs (i.e., not using a bonfire) and can store charges for Fire spells. For bonfires, it provides no bonus. Our calculator applies this bonus to all log types for simplicity, assuming you are line-burning.
- Firemaking Cape: The skillcape for Firemaking grants a passive 0.5% experience bonus.
- Ring of Fire: A reward from the Shades of Mort'ton minigame, this ring provides a small chance to save a log when burning.
Banking and Locations
For efficient log burning, choose locations close to a bank. Popular spots include:
- Grand Exchange: Very close to a bank, making it easy to resupply.
- Camelot Bank: Another popular choice due to its proximity to a bank and open space.
- Varrock West Bank: Good for lower-level players.
AFK vs. Intensive Methods
- AFK (Bonfires): Once you hit 35 Firemaking, bonfires are king for AFK training. Just click on a log, click on an existing fire, and repeat.
- Intensive (Wintertodt): While not strictly "intensive" in the same way as 3-tick skilling, Wintertodt requires more attention than bonfires but offers much better rewards and comparable XP rates, especially at lower Firemaking levels.
Using the OSRS Firemaking Calculator
Our calculator simplifies your Firemaking planning. Here's how to use it:
- Current Firemaking Level: Input your current Firemaking level.
- Target Firemaking Level: Enter the level you aim to achieve.
- Log Type: Select the type of logs you plan to burn. The calculator will use the associated XP and approximate Grand Exchange price.
- Bonuses: Check the boxes if you have the Pyromancer Outfit, Tome of Fire, or Firemaking Cape to accurately factor in their XP boosts. Note that the Tome of Fire bonus is applied assuming you are line-burning, as it doesn't affect bonfire XP.
- Calculate: Click the "Calculate" button to instantly see your total XP needed, number of logs required, estimated cost, and approximate time to reach your goal.
Conclusion
Firemaking is a straightforward skill in OSRS, and with the right planning, you can efficiently reach your desired level. Whether you're aiming for the Max Cape, specific quest requirements, or just want to enjoy the Wintertodt minigame, this calculator will be an invaluable tool on your journey. Happy burning!
