Understanding Skillchains in Final Fantasy XI
Skillchains are a fundamental combat mechanic in Final Fantasy XI, allowing players to deal massive bonus damage and set up powerful Magic Bursts. They are created when two or more Weapon Skills (WS) with specific elemental properties are executed in quick succession. The resulting chain adds extra damage and an elemental property, which can then be exploited by a mage for a Magic Burst.
How Skillchains Work
Every Weapon Skill in FFXI possesses one or more hidden elemental properties (e.g., Light, Dark, Fire, Ice) and a skillchain property (e.g., Scission, Detonation, Impaction). When these properties combine in a specific sequence, a skillchain is formed. The timing between WS is crucial; usually, the second WS must land within a few seconds of the first to trigger the chain.
Weapon Skill Properties
The core of skillchaining revolves around the six primary skillchain properties:
- Scission: Often associated with slashing and piercing attacks.
- Detonation: Frequently found in blunt and explosive-like attacks.
- Impaction: Common with powerful, single-hit strikes.
- Transfixion: Relates to piercing or focused attacks.
- Reverberation: Often found in multi-hit or echoing attacks.
- Compression: Associated with crushing or constricting attacks.
By chaining these properties, you create Level 1, Level 2, and even Level 3 skillchains.
Skillchain Levels and Elemental Properties
Skillchains are categorized by their level, which dictates their damage multiplier and the elemental property they impart:
- Level 1 Skillchains: Formed by chaining two Weapon Skills. Examples include Fusion (Light), Liquefaction (Ice), Fragmentation (Wind), Transfixion (Lightning), Reverberation (Fire), Induration (Earth), and Distortion (Water).
- Level 2 Skillchains: Created by chaining a third Weapon Skill onto a Level 1 skillchain, or by chaining two specific Level 1 skillchain properties. These offer higher damage multipliers. Common Level 2 skillchains are Gravitation (Dark), Impaction (Dark), and Compression (Light).
- Level 3 Skillchains: The pinnacle of physical damage, formed by chaining a fourth WS or a third WS onto a Level 2 skillchain. These are rare and incredibly powerful, typically resulting in "Light" or "Dark" skillchains.
The elemental property of the skillchain is vital for magic bursts. For instance, a Fusion (Light) skillchain can be followed by a Light-elemental spell (like Holy) for a significant Magic Burst bonus.
Using the Calculator
This calculator simplifies the complex rules of FFXI skillchains. To use it:
- Select the primary skillchain property of the first Weapon Skill you plan to use from the "Weapon Skill 1 Property" dropdown.
- Select the primary skillchain property of the second Weapon Skill from the "Weapon Skill 2 Property" dropdown.
- (Optional) If you plan a three-step chain, select the property of the third Weapon Skill from the "Weapon Skill 3 Property" dropdown. Note that for this third step, you can often use the name of a Level 1 skillchain (like Fusion) as a "property" to chain into a Level 2 or 3 skillchain.
- Click "Calculate Skillchain" to see the results. The calculator will display any skillchains formed, their level, and their elemental property.
Maximizing Your Skillchains
- Timing is Key: Practice your WS timings with your party members. A slight delay can break the chain.
- Job Synergy: Different jobs excel at certain skillchain properties. Coordinate your party composition to create powerful chains. For example, a Warrior's Detonation WS can often chain effectively with a Samurai's Scission WS.
- Elemental Affinity: Always try to follow up a skillchain with a Magic Burst of the same element for maximum damage.
- Gear Up: Certain gear pieces can enhance WS damage or reduce recast times, making skillchaining smoother.
We hope this calculator helps you become a more effective skillchain master in Vana'diel!
