Understanding the Feng Shui Kua Number

In the practice of Eight Mansions Feng Shui (Ba Zhai), your Kua number is a numerical value derived from your lunar birth year and gender. This number acts as a personal energy blueprint, revealing which compass directions are harmonious with your internal vibration and which may cause friction.

Why Your Kua Number Matters

Knowing your Kua number allows you to position yourself strategically throughout the day. By facing your "auspicious" directions while working, sleeping, or eating, you tap into a stream of positive Qi (energy) that supports your goals. Conversely, avoiding your "inauspicious" directions can help minimize stress, illness, and professional setbacks.

The Two Groups: East and West

Feng Shui categorizes individuals into two distinct groups based on their Kua number. Each group has a set of four lucky directions and four unlucky directions:

  • East Group (Kua 1, 3, 4, 9): Your best directions are East, Southeast, North, and South.
  • West Group (Kua 2, 6, 7, 8): Your best directions are West, Northwest, Southwest, and Northeast.

The Four Auspicious Directions

Each of your four lucky directions serves a specific purpose:

  • Sheng Chi (Success): The most powerful direction for prosperity, career growth, and vitality.
  • Tian Yi (Health): Ideal for the bedroom or for someone recovering from illness; promotes physical and mental well-being.
  • Yan Nian (Relationships): Enhances longevity and fosters harmonious relationships within the family and at work.
  • Fu Wei (Personal Growth): Excellent for meditation, study, and developing inner peace.

How to Use This Information

Once you have calculated your Kua number using the tool above, start making small adjustments to your environment. The most impactful change is usually the orientation of your bed. Try to position your bed so that the crown of your head points toward one of your four auspicious directions.

In your home office, try to sit so that you are facing your Sheng Chi (Success) direction. Even a slight shift in the angle of your desk can make a noticeable difference in your focus and productivity over time.

A Note on Lunar Birth Dates

The Feng Shui year begins on the Solar New Year (usually February 4th or 5th), not the Gregorian New Year (January 1st). If your birthday falls in January or the first few days of February, our calculator reminds you to check if you should technically use the previous year's data for an accurate reading.
