The differential ratio, often referred to as the "rear-end ratio" or "final drive ratio," is the relationship between the rotations of the driveshaft and the rotations of the axle. In simple terms, it tells you how many times the driveshaft must spin to turn the wheels exactly once.
Inside your differential, there are two primary gears responsible for this: the Pinion Gear (connected to the driveshaft) and the Ring Gear (connected to the axle). By dividing the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear, you arrive at the ratio.
How to Use the Differential Ratio Calculator
Using the calculator is straightforward. If you have the gears out of the vehicle, you can manually count the teeth. If you are buying new gears, the tooth count is usually stamped on the side of the ring gear.

How to Find Your Ratio Without Opening the Case
If you don't want to open your differential, there are two common ways to find your ratio:
- The Axle Tag: Most factory differentials have a small metal tag bolted to the cover. It will often have the ratio stamped directly on it (e.g., "3 73" or "3L73" for a limited slip).
- The Rotation Method: Jack up the rear of the vehicle (use jack stands!). Mark the driveshaft and the tire with chalk. Spin the tire exactly one full rotation and count how many times the driveshaft spins. If it spins roughly 3 and 3/4 times, you likely have a 3.73 ratio.
