Understanding Decomposed Granite (DG)

Decomposed granite, often abbreviated as DG, is a natural, finely crushed aggregate material that has become a favorite among landscape designers and homeowners alike. It's essentially granite that has weathered and eroded into small, gravel-like particles, ranging from coarse sand to small gravel in texture. Its natural, earthy tones—often shades of tan, brown, grey, or red—blend seamlessly into various outdoor environments, offering a rustic yet refined aesthetic.

Beyond its visual appeal, DG is highly valued for its practical properties. It offers excellent drainage, is relatively inexpensive compared to other paving materials, and provides a stable, permeable surface that's perfect for a variety of landscaping applications.

Common Uses for Decomposed Granite

The versatility of decomposed granite makes it suitable for numerous outdoor projects:

Pathways and Walkways

  • DG creates inviting, natural-looking paths that are comfortable to walk on.
  • It's a permeable surface, allowing rainwater to soak into the ground rather than running off.

Patios and Outdoor Living Areas

  • An excellent choice for creating casual, comfortable patio spaces.
  • Can be laid directly or over a compacted base for added stability.

Driveways (Stabilized DG)

  • While traditional DG can be used, stabilized DG (mixed with a polymer binder) is recommended for driveways to prevent rutting and maintain a firm surface under vehicle traffic.

Xeriscaping and Garden Beds

  • Its natural appearance complements drought-tolerant plantings.
  • Helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds when used as a mulch.

Bocce Ball Courts and Play Areas

  • The fine, compactable nature of DG makes it ideal for recreational surfaces like bocce ball courts.
  • Provides a softer landing surface than concrete for play areas.

Benefits of Choosing Decomposed Granite

  • Natural Aesthetic: Blends beautifully with natural landscapes, offering an organic and earthy feel.
  • Permeability and Drainage: Allows water to penetrate the ground, reducing runoff and supporting groundwater recharge.
  • Cost-Effective: Generally more affordable than concrete, pavers, or natural stone.
  • Low Maintenance: Once installed and compacted, it requires minimal upkeep, primarily occasional raking and replenishment.
  • Eco-Friendly: A natural, locally sourced material that minimizes environmental impact.

How to Use Our Decomposed Granite Calculator

Our calculator simplifies the process of determining how much DG you'll need. Follow these steps:

  1. Measure Length: Enter the length of your project area in feet.
  2. Measure Width: Enter the width of your project area in feet.
  3. Determine Depth: Input the desired depth in inches. For most pathways and patios, 2-4 inches is common. For driveways or high-traffic areas, you might go up to 4-6 inches, often over a gravel base.
  4. Click "Calculate DG Needed": The calculator will instantly provide an estimate in cubic yards and tons.

Important Note: Decomposed granite compacts significantly after installation. We recommend adding 10-15% extra to your calculated amount to account for compaction and potential waste during the project.

Installation Tips for Decomposed Granite

Proper installation is key to a long-lasting and beautiful DG surface:

1. Preparation is Key

Clear the area of any weeds, debris, or existing landscaping. Ensure proper grading for drainage, sloping away from structures at a rate of about 1/4 inch per foot.

2. Install Edging

Edging (such as bender board, metal, or stone) is crucial to contain the DG and prevent it from spreading into surrounding areas.

3. Base Layer (Optional but Recommended)

For high-traffic areas like driveways or patios, consider laying down a 2-4 inch compacted layer of gravel (like Class II road base) before the DG. This provides a firmer foundation and improves drainage.

4. Apply and Compact DG

Spread the DG evenly in layers of no more than 2-3 inches. Compact each layer thoroughly using a plate compactor or roller. Lightly spray with water before compacting to aid in consolidation. Repeat until you reach your desired depth.

5. Final Touches

After the final compaction, lightly water the surface to help it settle and bond. Allow it to dry and cure for a day or two before heavy use.

Important Considerations

  • Compaction: As mentioned, DG compacts. Always over-order slightly.
  • Drainage: Ensure your area has good drainage to prevent pooling and erosion.
  • Type of DG: Understand the difference between natural DG, screened DG (finer particles), and stabilized DG (with a binder for firmness).
  • Delivery Access: Ensure your property has adequate access for bulk material delivery.
  • Local Suppliers: DG density can vary slightly by region and supplier. Confirm with your local landscape supply yard.
