Curtain Weight Calculator

Whether you are installing a high-end motorized track or simply ensuring your curtain rod won't sag over time, knowing the total weight of your window treatments is essential. This calculator helps you estimate the weight based on fabric density and dimensions.

Why Knowing Curtain Weight Matters

Installing curtains is often viewed as a purely aesthetic task, but it’s actually a structural one. When you hang several kilograms of fabric from a single rod anchored into drywall, you are testing the limits of your hardware. If you underestimate the weight, you risk pulling the anchors out of the wall or bending the rod.

Understanding the Variables

  • Width & Height: This is the finished coverage area of the window or wall section you are covering.
  • Fabric Weight (GSM): This refers to Grams per Square Meter. Light sheers are typically around 50-100 GSM, while heavy blackout velvet can exceed 400 GSM.
  • Fullness Factor: Curtains aren't flat sheets. To get those beautiful folds, you need more fabric than the width of the window. A 2.0x fullness means you use 2 meters of fabric for every 1 meter of window width.

Common Fabric Weight Reference

If you aren't sure what GSM your fabric is, use these general estimates:

  • Sheer/Voile: 50 - 100 GSM
  • Light Linen/Cotton: 150 - 200 GSM
  • Standard Drapes: 250 - 300 GSM
  • Heavy Velvet/Blackout: 350 - 500 GSM

Hardware Safety Tips

Once you have calculated your total weight using the tool above, compare it against the weight rating of your curtain rod and wall anchors. Most standard telescopic rods are rated for about 5kg to 10kg. If your calculation exceeds this, consider using a heavy-duty track or adding a center support bracket to prevent the rod from bowing.
