The Basic Volume Formula
The fundamental calculation involves determining the volume of the area you need to fill:
Volume (cubic feet) = Length (feet) × Width (feet) × Depth (feet)
Since depth is often measured in inches, you'll need to convert it to feet by dividing by 12.
Once you have the volume in cubic feet, divide by 27 to get cubic yards (as there are 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard).
The Critical Role of Compaction
Crushed concrete, like most aggregates, will compact significantly once spread and vibrated. This means you need to order more material than the final, compacted volume you desire. The compaction rate for crushed concrete typically ranges from 15% to 25%, depending on the material's gradation and the compaction effort.
