Understanding the CA Bar Exam Components

- Performance Test (PT): The exam includes one Performance Test. The PT is designed to test fundamental lawyering skills, not substantive knowledge. You are given a "file" (containing facts) and a "library" (containing legal authorities) and must complete a task, such as drafting a memo, brief, or closing argument, based on the provided materials.
How Your Score is Calculated (Simplified Model)
The total California Bar Exam score is out of 2000 points, with a minimum passing score of 1440. Our calculator uses a simplified, yet common, model to estimate your score:
- MBE Scaled Score: The raw MBE score is converted into a scaled score to ensure fairness across different exam administrations. This scaled score directly accounts for 50% of your total exam score.
- Written Scaled Score: Your raw scores from the five essays and one performance test are combined. For estimation purposes, we assume a maximum raw score of 100 for each written component. These raw scores are then scaled to match the 2000-point scale, similar to how the MBE is scaled. This scaled written score accounts for the other 50% of your total exam score.
The calculator then sums these two components to provide your estimated total scaled score. Remember, this is an estimation, and the actual scaling process used by the State Bar of California is more complex, involving statistical adjustments to ensure fairness.
