Welcome to the AP CSP Exam Score Calculator

The AP Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) exam is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore the foundational concepts of computing and its impact on the world. To help you gauge your potential performance, we've developed this simple calculator. By inputting your estimated scores for the two performance tasks and the multiple-choice section, you can get an estimate of your overall AP score (1-5).

Understanding how your individual component scores contribute to your final AP score can be a powerful tool for strategic studying and preparation. Use this tool to identify areas where you might need to focus more effort or to simply satisfy your curiosity about your potential outcome.

How the AP CSP Exam is Scored

The AP CSP exam is unique in that it combines both performance-based assessments completed during the school year and a traditional end-of-course multiple-choice exam. Your final AP score is a weighted combination of these components:

Create Performance Task (30% of total score)

This task requires students to develop a program or app that solves a problem or expresses creativity. You'll submit a video demonstrating your program's functionality, a written response describing your development process, and your program code. This task assesses your ability to:

  • Design and implement algorithms.
  • Develop and test programs.
  • Explain your code and its purpose.
  • Address program purpose, function, and development.

Explore Performance Task (10% of total score)

In this task, students investigate a computing innovation of their choice. You'll analyze its purpose, its beneficial and harmful effects on society, and its data collection practices. This task evaluates your skills in:

  • Researching and analyzing computing innovations.
  • Understanding the societal impact of computing.
  • Communicating your findings effectively.

Multiple-Choice Section (60% of total score)

This section consists of 70 multiple-choice questions (57 single-select and 13 multi-select) and is completed in 2 hours. It covers a broad range of topics including:

  • Computational Thinking Practices
  • The Internet
  • Algorithms and Programming
  • Data and Information
  • Impact of Computing
  • Cybersecurity

Each question is designed to test your understanding of fundamental computer science principles and concepts.

Interpreting Your Estimated AP Score

The College Board defines AP scores as follows. Our calculator provides an estimation based on typical score distributions, but actual thresholds may vary slightly each year.

  • Score of 5: Extremely Well Qualified - Equivalent to a college grade of A.
  • Score of 4: Well Qualified - Equivalent to a college grade of A-, B+, or B.
  • Score of 3: Qualified - Equivalent to a college grade of B-, C+, or C. This score is generally considered passing.
  • Score of 2: Potentially Qualified - May receive college credit, depending on the institution.
  • Score of 1: No Recommendation - Not typically considered eligible for college credit.

Tips for AP CSP Success

To maximize your chances of achieving a high score, consider these strategies:

  • Master the Performance Tasks: These are a significant portion of your score. Start early, understand the rubrics, and seek feedback from your teacher.
  • Practice Coding Regularly: For the Create PT, consistent coding practice will improve your problem-solving and implementation skills.
  • Stay Informed on Computing Innovations: For the Explore PT and general understanding, keep up with new technologies and their societal implications.
