ACNH Villager Move-Out Calculator

ACNH Villager Move-Out Predictor

Estimate when a villager might ask to leave your island and the chances of a specific villager being chosen.

Welcome to the ultimate guide and calculator for managing your Animal Crossing: New Horizons island residents! Understanding how villagers decide to move out can be a bit of a mystery, but with this tool and a little knowledge, you can better predict and even influence these departures.

Understanding ACNH Villager Move-Out Mechanics

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, villagers don't just pack up and leave without a word. There's a specific system in place that determines when and who will get that iconic thought bubble indicating they're considering a move.

The 15-Day Cooldown

The most crucial rule is the "15-day cooldown." A villager will not get a thought bubble about moving out if it has been less than 15 days since the last time ANY villager had such a thought bubble (whether you encouraged them to stay or leave). This means if you just had a villager move out, or even if one just asked and you told them to stay, you'll have to wait at least 15 days for another villager to consider it.

Who Can't Ask to Move Out?

  • Your Most Recent Move-In: The villager who most recently moved onto your island (whether from a mystery island, campsite, or amiibo) cannot ask to move out. This "grace period" usually lasts for about 5-7 days after they've fully unpacked. For the purpose of this calculator, we consider them excluded if they are your absolute most recent arrival.
  • Villagers with Birthdays Today: No villager will ask to move out on their birthday. It's a day for celebration, not contemplation of departure!
  • Villagers in the Campsite/Plot Purchase Cycle: If you have a campsite visitor or are in the process of moving a villager in/out via Nookazon or similar methods, the move-out thought bubble mechanic might be temporarily suppressed.

Who is Most Likely to Ask?

After the exclusions, the game randomly selects a villager from the remaining pool. While the game's internal friendship system does play a role (both very low and very high friendship can sometimes trigger a move-out request, but often it's more random), ignoring a villager or hitting them with nets is NOT a reliable way to make them leave. In fact, it can sometimes increase friendship (negative attention is still attention!). The most consistent method involves time travel or simply waiting for the random selection.

How to Use the ACNH Move-Out Calculator

Our calculator helps you understand the current state of your island's move-out potential. Here's how to get the most accurate prediction:

  1. Total Villagers: Enter the current number of villagers on your island. This should be between 1 and 10.
  2. Days Since Last Move-Out Request: Accurately input the number of days that have passed since ANY villager last had a thought bubble about moving out. If you're unsure, estimate based on your play history. If it's been a very long time, enter a high number like 30.
  3. Is the villager you want to move out your MOST RECENT move-in?: Select 'Yes' if the specific villager you are targeting is the last one to arrive on your island. Select 'No' otherwise.
  4. Is it ANY villager's birthday today?: Check your in-game calendar. If any of your current residents are celebrating their birthday today, select 'Yes'. Otherwise, select 'No'.

Tips for Encouraging Villagers to Move Out

While the process is largely random, there are a few strategies players use:

  • Time Travel: The most effective (and controversial) method. After a villager asks to move, wait 15 days in real-time or time travel forward 15 days. Then, advance one day at a time until you see a thought bubble. If it's not the villager you want, close the game WITHOUT saving, advance to the next day, and check again.
  • Ignoring (Debatable): Some players swear by ignoring villagers they want to leave – no talking, no gifts, no interacting. However, many studies suggest this has little to no effect on move-out probability and may even increase friendship (negative attention is still attention!).
  • Befriending (Counter-Intuitive): Paradoxically, some theories suggest that very high friendship levels can also trigger move-out requests, as the villager feels they've "completed" their time with you. This is less reliable than time travel.
  • Amiibo Cards: The most guaranteed way to get a specific villager to leave. Invite an Amiibo villager to your campsite three times, craft their requested item each day, and on the third day, they will agree to move in and allow you to choose which current resident to replace.

Keeping Your Favorite Villagers

Worried about a beloved resident leaving? Here's how to keep them:

  • Talk to Them! If a villager has a thought bubble, talk to them immediately. If they ask to move, tell them to stay. They will happily agree.
  • Don't Ignore Thought Bubbles: If you ignore a villager with a thought bubble, they will eventually make their decision on their own. This could result in them moving out without your input.
  • Daily Interactions: Regularly talking to, gifting, and doing tasks for your villagers increases friendship, which generally makes them less likely to ask to leave (though not impossible).
